Our History

AllGarbe made of traditional gastronomy with its origins in the sea, is the meeting point for fish and seafood lovers.

Once called Algarbe Alandalus (Gharb al-Ândalus), referring to the Western part of Moorish Andalusia that gave rise to the toponym Algarve and which, even today, displays its deep marks in the linguistic, artistic and architectural heritage of the Algarve.

It is the history, customs and soul of this region that we preserve in our name and on our walls covered with traditional blue tiled panels that bring to mind the grandeur of the “people of our land” – Portimão.

This is an authentic Algarvian restaurant, with a team made up almost entirely of local staff. They know the best local and fresh sourced products the region has to offer, preserving the flavors of each dish, in its traditional cooking.

From the sea we bring to your table the fresh fish from our Algarve coast, slowly grilled or cooked in the most diverse ways, eeping all the juices that make your mouth water. Without forgetting the “queen” of the city of Portimão, chosen as the image of our logo, the beautiful sardine famously char-grilled and eaten off fresh bread soaked in the juice’s of this fish, and eaten off fresh bread soaked in the juice’s of the fish, served with a delicious algarvian salad with oregano and peppers.

And who has never tasted our delicious food specialities made uo of: algarvian style horse mackerel (made the traditional fishermen’s way), the Tavira tuna steak, the razor clam rice, the algarvian bean stew with whelks, the AllGarbe style fried squids or the traditional algarvian cockle in corn porridge.

If you haven’t already done so, you don’t know what you’re missing!

But we don’t stop here, we have a wide variety of shellfish waiting for you: the whelks (“canilhas”) and the giant scarlet prawns from the Algarve coast, the prawns from Quarteira, the clams, the cockles and oysters from the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, finishing with the crabs, the lobsters and the spider crab  that live in our two reef aquariums.

If you think you’ve read everything, you’re wrong, we still need to talk about the snacks from our Chef Teresa, we always save the best for last!

We begin with starters such as crab pâté, “alheira” balls with garlic mayonnaise or a gazpacho AllGarbe style soup, followed by fried cuttlefish roe with tartar sauce or fried moray eel. As a fish main course you can choose the traditional AllGarbe style codfish, a wide variety of grilled fresh fish (corvina, cherne, mullet…) or a tasty baked salt crusted golden bream or seabass with salt. If you prefer a meat dish we have excellent options such as the pork tenderloin Monchique style or slow cooked leg lamb.

Our Chef Teresa not only loves the Algarve, but also delights in preparing new dishes for her customers, and so the Portimonense pizza (with sardines) and the AllGarbe pizza (with cockles and prawns) were born.

Desserts include the sweet AllGarbe, the algarvian almound roulade (Chef Maria´s secret recipe), the exquisite sweet flavours of our region which come together in a fig pudding ball with almonds flambéed in “medronho” and almond liquer or carob tart with lemon curd.

Thus nothing better than sharing a table full of good food with good friends and good wine – you can discover here our wine list (with a special mention to our signature wine Arvad, which is bottled with all the flavours of the Algarvian countryside).
